Dr Phil Ruge
MBChB, B.Med.Sc, FRNZCGP
Dr Ruge has practiced here since the late 70s.
General Practice is his real passion evident by his loyal long standing practice base.
His other interests are complementary medicine and in the past, along with a local acupuncturist, he ran a musculoskeletal clinic.
His leisure time is spent on outdoor activities and of course his beloved dogs.
Dr Shanthi Selvakumar
M.B.B.S., Dip.Obst. (Otago), FRNZCGP
Dr Shanthi Selvakumar has been the much loved female GP of Blockhouse Bay Medical Centre for over fifteen years. She did her basic medical training in Sri Lanka before moving to New Zealand with her husband, currently a GP in Manukau. She has completed her Diploma in Obstetric medicine from the University of Otago and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners in 2002. She has a special interest in Women’s health and minor dermatological surgical procedures such as mole excisions within the Practice.
Dr Shanthi is also a trained classical musician and proud mum to two daughters who are following her medical footsteps in medicine.
Dr Brian Thomson
General Practice, MBChB, Dip Obst, FRNZCGP
Brian, an ex Lynfield College student, ex Waikowhai Primary and Intermediate student, studied at Auckland Medical School. Completed his hospital training in the Auckland regions so is a true JAFA. He started in Blockhouse Bay in the General Practice training program in 1991, has briefly owned another practice in Royal Oak before returning to Blockhouse Bay. His practice has a strong family backing, having practiced obstetrics in the past. Interests include golf (Akarana), fishing – especially fresh, especially Taupo in winter & salt locally.
Dr Kierrtana Selvakumar
MBBS (Hons) FRACGP FRNZCGP Dip Child Health
New Zealand born Dr Kierrtana Selvakumar graduated from University of Western Sydney in 2015 with honours and then completed her junior medical training at Westmead Hospital. She has completed her fellowship in General Practice with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2020 and also obtained a Diploma in Child Health. She has had broad exposure to a range of communities and conditions, having worked at 5 different practices across Sydney
She is a dynamic and young GP with special interests in adolescent and women’s health.
Kierrtana is passionate about developing strong bonds to her community and empowering patients to make informed decisions. She is the newest face at Blockhouse Bay Medical centre, but already a member of the family, as the daughter of our longstanding GP Dr Shanthi.
Outside of medicine, she has a degree in classical indian vocal and instrumental music, enjoys exploring the outdoors with her family and dog and is a fitness and wellbeing enthusiast.
Dr.Thilanka Weerasooriya
MBBS, FRNZGCP
Thilanka obtained her medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo and moved to New Zealand in 2013. She has since worked across multiple medical specialties in New Zealand.
Thilanka joined the GP college as a registrar in 2019 and became a GP fellow in 2022.
She is passionate about all aspects of General Practice, caring for patients and being part of patients care throughout their journey. Her special interests are women’s health and child health.
Thilanka is fluent in Sinhala and English. Outside work she is happily married with two gorgeous children who keep her busy. She loves spending time and travelling with her family and baking.
Ranjita Pratap
Director of Nursing
Ranjita has returned to the clinic as the Director of Nursing, she is a well known and highly respected Practice Nurse with many years experience here at Blockhouse Bay Medical Centre. Ranjita will oversee, train and mentor our nursing team to ensure the department runs smoothly and efficiently whilst providing the care our patients have come to expect.
Outside of work, Ranjita is kept busy with her three children and her own Appearance Medicine Clinic. We are delighted to have Ranjita back on the team.

I graduated from AUT in 2015. Since then, I‘ve worked in urgent care and primary health care. I am passionate about the care I provide to my patients, ensuring they are heard, cared for, and satisfied with the nursing service they receive here at Blockhouse Bay Medical Centre. A friendly greeting can go a long way, and a smile can make someone’s day. In my free time, I like to spend time with my children, doing fun filled activities.
Kehma
Receptionist
Kehma, our full time receptionist, holds more than 20 years of customer service experience from various industries and loves meeting people. She is passionate about learning new cultures. Being a Malaysian (Indian), Kehma can both speak and write in English, Tamil and Malay / Indonesian. She has been living in New Zealand since 2008. Kehma loves to cook Malaysian food and travelling is something she really enjoys.
Sandy Magee

I have been working in various customer service roles most of my working life.
I enjoy meeting new people and helping solve any issues they may have.
Outside of work I love to socialize with family and friends and explore new places.
I enjoy being outdoors and keep fit by walking especially at the beach in summer.

I am from the Philippines. I have participated in a number of medical missions to the deprived rural parts of the Philippines. Since coming to New Zealand, I have worked as a Healthcare Assistant which I have thoroughly enjoyed.
Being a Healthcare Assistant is not just a job for me, but a true calling.
I am genuinely, passionate about providing quality care, making a difference to people’s lives and contributing to the well-being of others.
I enjoy travelling.
